We offer a competitive salary starting at £28,000 depending on the programme. Our graduates are also eligible for our bonus payment, depending on the performance of themselves and the business.

What it’s like to work in this area

We strive to give our customers what they want, when they want it. Our food team is at the forefront of our customer offer working with over 8,000 suppliers. This fast-paced and exciting environment gives our graduates a great opportunity to develop themselves and really drive our strategy and the growth of our business. We use insight and feedback to help deliver successful plans and bring new and exciting products to market.

 
Our food team is diverse and made up of lots of different categories including our Produce team who are transforming our approach to food waste and our Health & Wellness team who are supporting families to stay healthy. You may get the opportunity to work in one of these areas as well as our Household and Pet team or our Bakery team.  

What you will be doing

Our two year programme will give you a breadth of experience into different areas of the Food team. No two days will be the same, one day you could be negotiating costs and selling, and another strategic planning and visiting supplier’s factories. There will also be the opportunity to experience our different store formats and test new products with our Product Developers to decide the next trend we should go after. It’s really rewarding to make an impact at such a large scale.

What we are looking for

Within the food team you will need to be driven, ambitious and willing to learn. It’s not essential that you have any previous experience but it definitely helps if you have a strong commercial mind, are comfortable with data and curious of market trends and changes.

Marketing

What it’s like to work in this area

In our Marketing team we create iconic brands and bring them to life. We engage with the nation every single day, through one of our 3,000 stores, social media channels, our owned media and through the more traditional methods of newspapers and TV. From Christmas to Valentine’s, or Ramadan to Halloween, we guide the business by talking to the right people, in the right way, at the right time. It’s fast-paced, creative and exciting.

We understand our customers in the same way as we understand our graduates and want to make a positive difference to their lives. As a graduate you will experience working with some of the UK’s biggest agencies on campaigns, newspaper adverts, the latest store opening, in-store point of sale and social media campaigns. Our team is responsible for all online touch points from home delivery and Click+Collect to customers shopping in store. Discovering customer trends are important and helps us to engage with our customers in new and different ways.

Our teams work in collaboration to support each area to help maximise its online opportunities, while working with analytics and technology to create the best experience for our customers.

What you will be doing

You will have the opportunity to learn about multiple areas of the business. What you will be doing

You will quickly take on responsibility developing towards a senior manager role in one of our large stores, before progressing to running your own Express store within 18 months. You will gain a great understanding within our business whether it’s working on a head office project or interacting with our distribution and fulfilment teams, this will give you a real breadth and depth of knowledge.

What we are looking for

Within our store team you will need an energetic and enthusiastic attitude, not forgetting a passion for retail. We’re looking for somebody who can effectively communicate with customers and colleagues, loves a challenge, as well as being able to think on their feet. The real success in this role will come from working as part of a team and being great with people.

What it’s like to work in this area

We want our graduates to hit the ground running by giving them real projects to deliver and providing them with the opportunities to develop specific technical programme skills. You will work with technology experts across the globe, learn on the job and be supported through a variety of training opportunities to give you the right skills and experience.

No two days are the same in our Technology team. You could be assisting the redesign of the grocery home shopping website and planning the rollout of our new checkout systems, or rolling out new mobile apps to customers and working on the development of new algorithms that optimise our transport planning. Technology continues to change the face of retail and ours leads the way.

What you will be doing

You will be right at the heart of our decision making and your goal will be to plan, coordinate and roll-out technology solutions in a safe and sustainable way. You will work collaboratively with multiple teams across Technology and the wider business to understand and find the best solutions for our customers. You will make sure our deliverables align to our strategic goals, manage risks and challenges, create plans and track progress working with software engineers and other key stakeholders.

What we are looking for

If you enjoy working as part of a team, are a great communicator, enjoy delivery and fast-paced change, this is the programme for you. We’re looking for someone with a strong technical understanding, a drive to create and coordinate a plan and a creative problem solver. You will need an eye for detail whilst seeing the bigger picture and an understanding of technology applications. We care about cyber security and it’s critical that we protect our data and systems. You will receive specific cyber security training and real projects to work on which will provide you with opportunities to develop your skills further. You will work as part of a global cyber security team, and with the opportunity to work with a range of experts.

Our cyber security team are the eyes and ears of our organisation. We use the latest technologies to increase visibility and protection of systems, services and data. To do this we need to stay ahead of the latest threats and continuously improve our tooling, procedures and processes.

We work collaboratively with our software and systems engineering teams to support security throughout the development lifecycle, as well as to build proactive monitoring and responses to security events.

What you will be doing

You will develop a broad knowledge of cyber security, achieving this by completing a number of three month placements across a range of security functions from security operations centre to vulnerability management and security testing. You will have the opportunity to work on incident response, security platforms and security architecture. You also will contribute to a global cyber defence effort by evaluating, securing systems and responding to incidents.

What we are looking for

We’re looking for graduates who want to be part of a cross functional, diverse and global team. If you’re well organised, pragmatic and a lateral thinker with an inquisitive mind then we want to hear from you. While it’s not essential you have a degree in computer science or a STEM subject, you must have and be able to demonstrate a keen interest and passion in cyber security.

What it’s like to work in this area

Our software engineers continue to lead the way building technology that can have a real impact on our customers. Our programme will give you the exposure to a selection of the latest technologies. It aims to equip you with the right knowledge and skills to become one of our future engineering leaders. You will be able to bring your knowledge and experience to life, helping us to better serve our customers. We’ll also show you how to architect some of the most complex and challenging software systems being built. Using agile principles, you will learn how to protect customer data, how to automate and how to build large scale systems.

What you will be doing

You will experience the breadth of software engineering with the opportunity to spend time in both our front end and back end development teams. You will be paired with other engineers in your team and work closely with your product managers to build software for either our customers or colleagues.

What we are looking for

We’re keen to see a passion for technology and that you have an aptitude to develop quality code, so it’s not vital you have a degree in computer science. We’re looking for logical thinkers who are keen to learn and build their skills along with enjoying the challenge of working with something new.

Procurement

What it’s like to work in this area

Our team is responsible for buying all of the goods and services needed to run our business. We buy across eight different countries and oversee a total spend of £4bn. This can be spent on anything from tills and trollies to transport and the production of our next Christmas advert, so if you’re looking for scope and scale, we certainly have it.

No day is ever the same in our Procurement team, whether you’re out and about visiting suppliers, or working on campus with colleagues across the business. You will spend most of your time building relationships with internal and external stakeholders, from understanding their needs to negotiating the best contracts for our business. 

What you will be doing

Within our diverse procurement team, you will have the opportunity to experience two placements over your two year programme. You could be buying anything from media services and facilities management to consumable products such as produce bags and colleagues’ uniform. You will be able to complete your CIPs journey fully supported by us and there will also be an exciting opportunity to fully understand our Business Services division in India, immersing yourself with our buying support teams.

What we are looking for

You will need a passion to innovate product ideas and simplify the way we operate. We’re looking for someone with strong communication skills, empathy and someone that is able to influence with a range of stakeholders. The real success in this role will come from you having an interest in analysing data and discovering market trends as well as being a great communicator.
