Our experts develop bespoke solutions, provide specialist advice, design and undertake experimentation, test and trials to independently evaluate other suppliers solutions for our customers, who need the technology they employ to deliver the best outcomes possible.

In the Secure Networks Group, you might be involved in designing, testing and configuring network and infrastructure systems; system and security administration; or integration and problem solving becoming an expert in firewalls, routers, security devices, virtualisation techniques and IT systems.

Or you could be providing military radio and satellite systems on to a number of military platforms including ships and submarines as well as measuring radio performance and modelling waveforms and protocols. 

You might even be using your physics, mathematics and operational analysis skills to model Space Weather and ionospheric propagation, or providing architectural solutions and models to challenging communications and networks problems.

In the Cyber & Intelligence Group you may find yourself conducting cyber risk assessments, advising customers on mitigation strategies, working alongside some of the nation’s leading cyber security experts who devise and lead ‘red team’ exercises, expert security architects and analysts. The nature of cyber security means that our cyber and intelligence experts get involved across the whole range of QinetiQ business.

In both cases you are likely to find yourself representing QinetiQ with customers  alongside our experienced staff, working in multidisciplinary teams developing, deploying or testing state of the art solutions, taking part in field trials, measurement campaigns, capability demonstrations and/or military platform visits. The group encompasses all of our Software Engineers in the company. There is read across into the Information Services Function – where we direct the procurement of IT equipment and associated off the shelf software. Our Software Engineers work across the company, building and integrating for our customers’ advantage.

Software engineering in QinetiQ supports a broad range of our capabilities from designing submarines to cyber security. As a software engineer in QinetiQ you can expect to be involved in application development across a broad range of R&D, product and services projects from mission systems to simulation & training. As you develop you may get a chance to be involved in specialist software engineering activities such as assuring software is fit to fly in a fast jet.

The Graduate role will be a wide variety of software tasks, including GUI development, Database interaction, full-stack web development, signal processing.

Our Applied Scientists fall into 4 main groupings:

• The Human Performance group deal with Human Performance in all kinds of situations – from the assessment of the effects of G-Force for pilots under extreme operational conditions to the performance of service men and women with different types of clothing and equipment, in differing organisational structures and command chains. We are looking for psychologists, physiologists, human factors specialists and other skills

• Our Materials scientists come from a materials, chemistry, physics or engineering background and are employed in QinetiQ across a wide variety of projects – we design, assess and advise on the best materials and the best way to employ these in support of our customers’ applications – this can include the development of multi-functional materials to how we can use new materials such as graphene.

• Our Weapons scientists come from a variety of physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering backgrounds. They are critical to research, advice and assessments of weapons systems from long range missiles to small arms pistols and including the detailed technologies that enable their use. In many cases the first degree has been supplemented with a second degree or experience in the weapons field.

• Our Electro Magnetic and Acoustics Scientists again come mainly from Physics, Maths and Engineering Backgrounds – but they have developed their specialism in key areas. The electromagnetic scientists and engineers work in the development of technologies, materials and systems for the controlled release of energy, communication, detection and protection against threats across a variety of wavebands.

To deliver effective solutions to our range of Customers, we employ a mix of theoretical, modelling and experimental capabilities and our teams use an impressive array of facilities and laboratories – from a long arm centrifuge to assess G-loadings on humans to analytical chemistry and materials characterisation laboratories.

Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering and engineering management dealing with complex systems over their life cycles from concept & requirements through architecture & design, realization, test & acceptance and through-life operation.

The Specialist Engineering Group includes:

•The Trials Management team are comprised of engineers and scientists from all backgrounds who specialise in the planning and risk management of hazardous trials from the initial customer enquiry to the design and conduct of complex trials – Dynamic trials can involve anything from small arms weapon testing to large calibre proof firings or even complete armoured weapons systems. Static trials involve the assessing and data recording of slow and fast cook offs to fully instrumented arena trials on anything from small arms ammunition to complete missile systems.

•EMC and Environmental Test Engineers – mostly from a physics, electrical and mechanical engineering background – dealing with the cooking, freezing, blasting and vibration of assets alongside electromagnetic engineers.

•The Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives engineers and technicians come from all backgrounds and deal with the manufacture, testing, storage, processing, use and disposal of explosives, munitions and ordnance – from bullets to missiles.

•The safety engineering team are comprised of engineers and scientists from all backgrounds who have a specialism in safety engineering – from safety cases on ranges to aircraft safety cases.

Knowledge, skills and personal qualities required:

•A suitable recognised science or engineering related qualification at a degree level or higher in accordance with the specific posts

We have growing teams working on important new Cyber and Information topics, including: development and application of Data Analytics and Big Data techniques; development of Synthetic Environments, Augmented Reality and Live-Synthetic Environments for training and evaluation; and Autonomy and control of autonomous vehicles and systems.
